Statement

I did this woke on a sabbatical leave/leave of absence from late 79 through early 81. I was supposed to have been working on the NACS but I'd devoted so many months/years to the project that I went out and did something as different as I could image: I aimed a view camera at the ground in empty lots in Albuquerque and built the image under the camera. This work is in extensive collections.

About the Work

This work springs from another project and is a reaction to that very different work, the North American Cross Section. The NACA , an image of the entire US as seen looking northward along Interstate 80, was an enormous and complex endeavor that dominated my life for about a decade. Exercises are the antithesis thereof: discrete, limited, fun, visually sensual, disorienting and not of a specific place.

The work is full of lies and fictions: a shadow that is paint; a plane that is in fact two, widely separated: a flat surface that appears to peel and uplift; a scale that is contradicted by the dis-attached color and form adjacent to it. I am particularly fascinated by these contradictions, spatially and metaphorically.
