"North American Cross Section" is a single photographic work of art which documents the entire United States as seen looking northward along Interstate Highway 80 from San Francisco to New York City. In this 1977 work the land and cityscapes appear as a continuous image across the 21,000 color snapshots. These images are printed edge to edge on long rolls of photographic paper to form what is the world's largest photograph. The "North American Cross Section's" primary purpose is the exploration of what the scale of the continent really is and how we, humankind collectively, function in our uneasy relationship with its frail surface.
